Recently, Eiji Aonuma the producer of many games in the Zelda series has stated that the Zelda staff would do a Nintendo 3DS version of Majora’s Mask, the second and final Zelda game that was released on October 26, 2000. Majora’s Mask is perhaps the darkest Zelda game of them all and it certainly changed the dynamic of the Zelda universe in many ways. You had only 72 game hours to complete the game and Link had to battle someone else instead of Ganon or Vaati…the Skull Kid.
Eiji Aonuma stated that if there was enough of a desire from Zelda fans to see Majora’s Mask on the 3DS, then it could be a possibility. Aonuma said that fans had a huge desire to see The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on the 3DS and that was why it was remade onto the Nintendo 3DS system.
If there was a similar output of emotion and desire from fans for a remake of Majora’s Mask, I believe it would be made. However, I do not believe that a remake for Majora’s Mask is going to happen for the Nintendo 3DS. While Ocarina of Time received much praise overall for being groundbreaking, Majora’s Mask did not. If you recall, the jump from a bird’s eye view Link To The Past on Super Nintendo to Ocarina of Time’s complex 3D world was a huge leap in technology. Majora’s Mask used the same engine as Ocarina of Time and we did not see any graphical enhancements in the series until Wind Waker for Gamecube and arguably not until Twilight Princess for Wii.
Many players of Majora’s Mask complained that it was too difficult of a game. This was mainly because you had 72 game hours to complete 4 major temples and defeat the Skull Kid. You had to make use of the Ocarina of Time to slow down and advance time. If you did not complete a temple, you had to redo it. Another complaint was that instead of the standard “big 9 levels” of Zelda, there were only 4 temples to complete. Also, the bottom line is that Majora’s Mask did not sell as many copies as Ocarina of Time. I do believe that this is because you had to spend money on a controversial memory expansion pack which I believe was another $49.95.
I however, did enjoy Majora’s Mask very much. There were many sidequests and I enjoyed seeing the alternate personalities of the characters from Hyrule that wound up in Termina, which was kind of an alternate version of Hyrule. Think of it as “the second quest” from the original Legend of Zelda. It was fun switching between masks and playing a ton of mini-games. However, will Nintendo profit from releasing Majora’s Mask on the 3DS?
Earlier this summer, The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time 3DS was launched as part of the 25th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda series. To continue the celebration, the final Nintendo Wii Zelda title called Skyward Sword will be coming in time for the holidays.
If the hardcore fans of the Zelda series can make their voices heard, perhaps we can have Majora’s Mask released for 3DS by the summer of 2012. Let’s just hope this time we don’t need to buy that “special memory pack” like we had to for Nintendo 64 in order to play it!
